How I Came Across the Vintage Camper Community

The year was 2018 when I decided to quit the 9-5 life and live outside the box… literally a tin can box.

At the time, I was working for the school in Wyoming and the school year was coming to an end. I knew I wanted to do something out of the norm that summer and of course after breaking up with the boyfriend, that’s when you do something wild. I randomly applied for a summer position at Custer State Park, not even knowing what the job entailed. But a few days later got the call and that’s when I officially accepted the job. I had 1 week to find somewhere to live while I was there for the summer. State parks and national parks usually have employee cabins and campgrounds but I had 2 dogs traveling with me so I couldn’t stay in the employee cabins. That would leave me to find a camper within a week.

After searching and searching, going from every town within 100 mile radius I was getting stressed out that I couldn’t find anything small enough to be pulled by my jeep. With 2 days left until I had to move, I became the luckiest girl in the world.

With a last attempt on finding a camper I got a notification of one for sale 20 minutes away. Within minutes I messaged the lady who posted it to say we were coming to look at it. This is where every single coincidence that could have happened, happened.  Turns out the people selling it was someone who my dad had known since high school. We get to the house and the guy lived at the house I almost bought a year prier! AND THEN…. the camper was owned by my high school friends family before him!

Everything fell into place just at the right moment. Bought the camper same day and became the official owner of a 1969 Forester travel trailer. Cleaned it out and the next day I was moving across the state to live in it at a campground in Custer State Park.

After living in it full time for almost a year I had the crazy idea to refurbish the inside. I started looking online and on Facebook for different ideas and came across the vintage camper groups. I had NO IDEA that there was a community of people who also love little campers like this. I fell in love looking at all the types of vintage campers and how other people remodel them.

Who knew that some out of the blue coincidence would soon become an obsession.
